October 26th, 2015 Newsletter

Hello once again, fellow economics students. Much has happened for Canada, and therefore much for all of us, since the last SUE newsletter. The federal election, whether you are elated or devastated by the results, marks a decisive shift in Canada's history. With all the federal change in the air and the Provincial government set to release this year's (yes, this year's) budget this Tuesday, it is natural for us economics students to pause a moment and worry about our place in it all. Though it is midterm season, it is natural to stop to ask where exactly will we end up when all the assignments and exams are over and all that matters is getting a successful and desirable job?

This week SUE's focus is on the practical, career-side of your journey in UofC's economics department. Here is where you can find details about the resources available to you that will best prepare you for the real world search for your ideal career with an economics degree. These are the upcoming events designed to make your career search and likelihood of getting hired at a career you want once entering the workforce. Scroll down and check out our website for more information on the following SUE and Econ-related events. You can also find a link to a jobs list for economics students in the side bar:

  • Fidelity Investments Information Session (*TODAY from 12:00pm - 2:00pm*)

  • Student-Prof Mixer

  • Arts Co-op Program Information Session

  • CV (academic resume) Building Workshop

These are opportunities designed to help you understand why Economics is an important field of study, how you can excel while earning your degree, and where you can go once you have your degree.

Fidelity Investments Information Session (*TODAY*)

Come to EEEL 151 TODAY from 12:00pm to 2:00pm to learn about Fidelity Investments in an exclusive SUE club event. FREE FOOD WILL BE PROVIDED! Information includes what it looks like to work for Fidelity Investments, what opportunities there are for interested students, and how it looks to work as an economist in the real world.

Have you ever wanted to get to know your profs in a less formal environment? Do you wish you knew what made them choose economics? Do you wonder what it is your profs do when they are not teaching? Then this is your chance! Join us for an evening of relaxed community building with a variety of professors from the economics department. This laid back and fun event will take place on Thursday, November 5th from 3:00pm - 5:00pm in the Arts Lounge in the Social Sciences building. This is the perfect chance to get to know your profs on a more personal level.

Arts CO-OP Program Through the University of Calgary, economics students have access to a practical and accessible co-operative education program designed to give over a full year of fully paid work experience to students before they graduate with their undergraduate degree. If you are interested, there will be an Information Session held in AD 140 on Wednesday, October 28th from 4:00pm - 5:00pm. If you register to attend on their page, you can find out how Co-op can improve your odds of attaining your goals.

CV (Academic Resume) Building Workshop

As students, building a professional CV (curriculum vitae) is vital to getting a career once you have your degree. This workshop, which SUE will host in the end of November, will be an informative guide for building a standardized and accurate representation of your academic experience. This is the first of a series of workshops SUE will be running to build career/interview skills for Economics students in order to turn their degrees into successful careers. Stayed tuned for more details and a finalized date on our website.
