Food Drive Competition Information *location update*

Christmas is fast approaching and for many of us that means large dinners, parties, and more consumption of sweets than we care to admit. However, there are many Calgarians for whom a full meal is a rarity. The rapid plunge in oil prices has put almost everyone in Alberta on edge, particularly us students, but there are people for whom the fall means more than most of us here can even imagine.

Food bank usage is up 20% this year in Alberta, and across the country the number of people using food banks is higher than it was during the Great Recession. More close to home, usage of the University of Calgary’s Campus Food Bank has doubled over the past year alone. It is not only homeless people living downtown who go hungry due to poverty. There are many students who sit next to you in your university classes who, though they hide it well, are in desperate need of food.

That’s why this year SUE, among other campus clubs, is participating in the Holiday Food Drive clubs competition, hosted by the Campus Food Bank. Donations can be made November 17th at table 203 in MacEwan Student Centre, Wednesday November 18th at table 205 in MacEwan Student Centre, and Thursday November 19th at table 1 in ICT. The Campus Food Bank has provided a list of items most desperately needed, as seen below:

  1. Toiletries (toilet paper, feminine hygiene products, travel-sized shampoo, bar soap, etc.)

  2. Peanut butter

  3. Canned fruits and vegetables

  4. Cereal and oatmeal

  5. Canned pasta (i.e. Chef Boyardee) and chili

  6. Meal helpers (i.e. Sidekicks, Hamburger Helpers, etc.)

  7. Coffee, tea and hot chocolate

  8. Pasta sauce, pasta and dry soup

  9. Canned meat (ham, turkey, chicken), seafood (salmon, tuna, sardines) and beans

  10. Gluten-free products

Donations of cash or other food products are also accepted.

It’s often said that the measure of a civilization is how it treats its weakest members. As future economists it is our concern and responsibility to safeguard the wellbeing of those less fortunate in our society. Help everyone maximize their utility this Christmas by donating what you can. Every little bit helps. Make SUE the winning club it is by contributing to this competition for a more than worthy cause!
