January 18, 2016

HELLO ECONOMICS STUDENTS and welcome to Winter Semester 2016! We, the SUE executive team, hope you had a wonderful break and a strong finish to the fall semester. We are so excited for the many events we already have lined up for this semester and we hope you can all take advantage of what we as a club have to offer!

For those of you who have never gotten a newsletter from us before (or never really read them last semester- don't worry, we get it), these bi-weekly newsletters are meant to keep you updated on the latest achievements and upcoming events of SUE.You should also stay connected by liking our awesome facebook page, following us on Twitter, and frequently checking out our beautiful website at www.ucalgarysue.com

This upcoming week is clubs week and though we will NOT have a table in the area where most clubs are, we will have a table in social sciences January 18-22 from 10am-3pm. Stop by to talk to enthusiastic executives and learn more about SUE, what we have lined up for the next few months, and why you should buy your tickets for the Industry Night Gala. You will be able to purchase your $20 tickets at the table for cash this week as well as being able to purchase them online.

Be sure to tell your friends and new classmates about SUE! We want everyone who can to take advantage of our many programs and events!

SEMESTER KICK-OFF SOCIAL

Come out for an evening of free nachos, great conversation, the opportunity to catch up with friends, and a free first drink on us for members! This will be the first event of the semester and will be at the Den Dance Floor on Thursday, January 21st from 4:00-6:00pm.We had a similar kick off to the fall semester and we are sure many of you remember the great time it was. We hope to have the same great turn out and fun time together as Economics students!

This is a great opportunity to get to know some of the most active, successful, enthusiastic, and helpful economics students U of C has to offer. If you have had a hard time finding a community within the economics program, this event could be the first step towards becoming a true member of the undergraduate economics community. We hope you can all make it! If you aren't already a member, membership costs $5 and can be purchased at the event. Invite your friends!

INDUSTRY NIGHT GALA- Networking Opportunity!

SUE is proud to present our Industry Night Gala onFebruary 3rd, 2016 at the Silver Springs Golf and Country Club. Transportation to and from the event will be provided from campus, so you do not have to worry about getting yourself there. There will also be LIMO SERVICE to Knoxville's Tavern for an exclusive after party where we will turn up!

This evening offers our members an opportunity to meet face to face with a diverse selection of industry professionals (at least 10 from a variety of backgrounds), as well as bond with their peers. You will get a personalized view of employment opportunities and hear directly from employed professionals about what careers are available with an Economics degree! The event is business-formaland includes a delicious buffet dinner (who doesn't love great food?).

We have so many different economists and professionals for you to meet and network with! Whether you are curious about work in public policy, or environmental economics, or the oil and gas industry there will be an economist there to match your interests. You will get to hear from keynote speakers Dr. Ron Kneebone of the School of Public Policy (learn more about Dr. Kneebone in this exclusive interview by SUE's own Busola Fapojuwo) and Todd Hirsch, Head Economist at ATB. You will also meet countless other professional economists. This is the largest event for SUE this academic year and we are so excited for you to be there!

Tickets are only $20 for members and are for sale on our website. From Jan 18-22 from 10am-3pm you can also purchase your tickets for cash at our table in Social Sciences across from the coffee shop. If you are still unsure of what this Gala will mean for you, come and talk to us. We'd love to tell you more!
We wish all of you could be there, but space is limited and there are only 25 seats left so reserve your ASAP!

WELCOME TO THE NEW VP OF FINANCE- JEFF FONG

We are proud to announce the addition of Jeff Fong to SUE's executive team. He joined SUE because he really wanted to join a community of bright individuals who share the same passion for economics that he has. He hopes to push himself out of his comfort zone and learn skills that are not taught in the classroom through his role with SUE. He hopes to one day work in Finance, but for now he is happy to contribute to this club as the VP of Finance. You can learn more about Jeff and the other executive team members under 'The Team' on our website. Welcome to the team, Jeff!
