Industry Night Newsletter
Welcome back SUE members! Another holiday season has passed and we hope it was amazing. To kick off the new year we have a lot planned. First, we will have a booth at clubs week all day January 17th and 18th in Mac Hall. If you know someone who is interested in learning more about SUE or have not purchased their membership yet, send them our way! We will be there from 9:00am-5:00pm. To celebrate the start of the winter semester and just to take our minds off the cold, we will also have a Back-to-School Mixer in the Den on January 24th from 4:00pm-6:00pm. Members will as always be treated to free beer and great company. We would love to see you there, even for just a bit (come buy industry night tickets). The event is highly casual and just for fun so don’t be shy.
More importantly, we have our biggest event of the year fast approaching! This year's INDUSTRY NIGHT GALA is on Wednesday, February 8th, 2017 at the Silver Springs Golf and Country Club. We would love it if you were in attendance! This event is a fantastic opportunity for students to have an intimate sit-down gourmet dinner with industry professionals from a variety of economics-related fields. If you attend you will get a chance to hear about their experiences building their careers and connect with them personally. After purchasing your ticket, you will have the opportunity to choose which fields you are most interested in hearing about. We have guest professionals from economic fields including: finance, public policy, healthcare economics, oil and gas, regulatory economics, environmental economics, and academia. Many of the professionals are alumni and recent graduates from U of C and therefore will give valuable insight into how to transition from life as an undergraduate U of C economics student to a successful career in Industry. We have carefully chosen a wide range of professionals for our 2017 Industry Night to give SUE members a broad spectrum of information on what it is like to graduate and use your degree in the real world.
The evenings keynote speaker is Dr. Bev Dahlby (BA Honors Economics from U of S, MA from Queen's University, PhD from London School of Economics) of the Calgary School of Public Policy. Dr. Dahlby has experience working as a tax reform policy advisor to the government of Thailand as well as the World Bank in Brazil. His opinion is highly sought after by both federal and provincial governments here in Canada, and he is a member of the Stats Canada advisory board. A chance to hear him speak would normally cost many times more than our offered price and SUE appreciates his generosity in speaking at our event.
Transportation is available to and from the event with buses leaving at 5:30pm from the U of C. Doors open at 5:30pm and the gala dinner begins at 6:15pm. This is a business formal event, so please attend looking and acting your very best. Tickets are on sale now on our website (www.ucalgarysue.com/industry-night-tickets) for the bargain price of $40 for SUE members and $45 for non-members. There are a limited number of seats and the price will rise closer to the event so do not miss out. Last year we sold out and had a waiting list. You can also purchase your tickets in person during Clubs Week in Mac Hall on Tuesday Jan. 17th and Wednesday Jan. 18th between 9:00am and 5:00pm, or at our Back-to-School Mixer on Jan. 24th. We will also have tickets available at the Science Theaters table all day January 23, 25, and 27.
Looking forward to another great semester with all of you.
